Best Time of Year to Visit Yellowstone

Best Time of Year to Visit Yellowstone National Park

The best time to visit Yellowstone depends on whether you prioritize wildlife viewing, hiking, or avoiding the heavy summer crowds.

Best for Wildlife Viewing

  • Late April to Early June: This is “baby season.” You have the best chance to see bison calves (red dogs), elk calves, and bear cubs. Animals are often at lower elevations near the roads to graze on new spring grass.

  • September to October: This is the peak for the elk and moose rut. You can hear bull elk bugling and see them competing for mates, particularly around Mammoth Hot Springs. Bears are also very active as they forage for calories before hibernation.

  • Winter (December – March): This is the premier time for wolf watching, as they are easier to spot against the white snow, especially in the Lamar Valley.

Best for Hiking & Weather

  • July and August: This is the only time when almost all high-altitude trails are completely free of snow. The weather is at its most stable, with average highs in the 70s and 80s, making it ideal for long treks into the backcountry.

  • September: September is often considered the “sweet spot” in Yellowstone. The weather remains pleasant for hiking (though mornings are crisp), the bugs have died down, and the summer heat has faded.

Best to Avoid Crowds

  • The Shoulder Seasons: September (after Labor Day) and May offer a balance of open roads and significantly fewer visitors than the peak summer months.

  • October: The park begins to quiet down significantly. While some services start to close, the sense of solitude is much higher, and you can enjoy the geothermal features without the boardwalk traffic.

Important Seasonal Constraints

  • Road Openings: Most interior roads do not open to cars until late April. The road from the North Entrance (Gardiner) to the Northeast Entrance (Silver Gate/Cooke City) is the only one open year-round to wheeled vehicles.

  • Road Closures: Most park roads close to regular vehicle traffic in early November to prepare for the winter “oversnow” season (snowcoaches and snowmobiles).

  • Facility Availability: Many lodges and campgrounds do not open until late May or early June and begin closing by mid-September.
