Tallest Mountains in Tennessee

Tallest Mountains in Tennessee

  • The State High Point: Clingmans Dome (recently officially renamed to its Cherokee name, Kuwohi) is the highest point in Tennessee and the third-highest in the entire Appalachian range. A futuristic concrete observation tower at the top offers 360-degree views that can reach seven states on a clear day.

  • The Massive Massif: Unlike many peaks that are just high points on a ridge, Mount Le Conte is a massive mountain that rises significantly above its surroundings. It is famous for being the highest peak completely contained within Tennessee and for the LeConte Lodge, which is accessible only by hike and is the highest guest lodge in the Eastern U.S.

  • The Southern Sixers: Tennessee contains a significant portion of the “Southern Sixers”—peaks in the Appalachian Mountains that exceed feet. Because of this high elevation, these summits host a Spruce-Fir forest ecosystem, which is more commonly found in Canada than in the Southeastern United States.
