Tallest Mountains in the Appalachians
Most of the tallest peaks are concentrated in the Blue Ridge Mountains (specifically the Black Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains) of North Carolina and Tennessee.
The Black Mountains: This subrange in North Carolina is home to six of the ten highest peaks in the entire chain, including Mount Mitchell.
The 6,000-foot Club: There are about 40 peaks in the Appalachians that exceed 6,000 feet, and every single one of them is located in the Southern Appalachians (NC and TN).
Northern Comparison: For context, the highest point in the Northern Appalachians is Mount Washington in New Hampshire, which stands at 6,288 ft. While it didn’t make the “Top 20” for the entire range, it is famous for having some of the worst weather on Earth!
