Tallest Mountains in the Midwest

Tallest Mountains in the Midwest

The Midwestern United States is generally characterized by its vast prairies and rolling plains, but it also contains several significant mountainous regions, most notably the Black Hills of South Dakota. While the central and eastern portions of the Midwest feature modest high points—often called “hills” or “mounds”—the western edge of the region rises dramatically. In fact, Black Elk Peak in South Dakota is the highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.

The following table lists the 25 highest named summits in the Midwest. Because the Black Hills contain nearly all of the region’s true mountains, the list is heavily concentrated in western South Dakota.
