In New Hampshire, timber rattlesnakes are typically black with almost no pattern, range in length from 3-5 feet, and are easily identified by the rattle on their tail. Fortunately for hikers in New Hampshire, timber rattlesnakes are extremely rare. They are considered endangered in the state of New Hampshire and are protected by state law. Timber rattlesnakes are also generally quite docile and only strike if disturbed or stepped on.  The odds of seeing a rattlesnake in New Hampshire are extremely low, and the odds of being bitten are even lower. That being said, they are highly venomous snakes, and their bites can be deadly.
