Tallest Mountains in South Dakota
South Dakota is home to some of the most striking topography in the Great Plains, primarily centered in the granite-domed wilderness of the Black Hills. These “islands in the plains” hold a unique geographical distinction: Black Elk Peak is the highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains until you reach the Pyrenees in France. From the sacred heights of the Black Elk Wilderness to the famous ski slopes of Terry Peak, these summits offer a rugged landscape of pine forests, quartzite spires, and historic fire lookouts. The following table identifies the tallest natural peaks in South Dakota, almost all of which are located within the stunning Black Hills National Forest.
