This South African Wine Estate is Perfect for Animal Lovers

South Africa is world-renowned for its animals and its wine. On our visit to the South African wine region of Stellenbosch we found an estate that combined both: Remhoogte Wine Estate.

With hundreds of vineyards and wine estates located in Stellenbosch and only limited time, we decided that spending the night at one of the estates would give us a more authentic experience than we would get if we were to stay at a hotel in town. We stumbled upon Remhoogte on Airbnb, a small family-owned estate situated only a few miles outside of the town center. As we drove through the gated entrance and down the quiet tree-lined road into the estate, it quickly became clear that we had made the right decision.

When we parked the rental car, we were immediately greeted by an extremely friendly group of dogs that would become our companions for the duration of our stay. The two weimaraners  stayed by our side for the duration of the wine tasting and it was rare that we went anywhere on the estate grounds without at least one of the five dogs keeping us company.

In addition to the family pets, the estate is also home to some of South Africas native wildlife including wildebeest, zebra and springbok. The game farm is fenced off from the rest of the estate, so you don’t have to worry about any run-ins with large wild animals. The views of the animals grazing in the shadow of the Simonsberg Mountains is quite the site to wake up to in the morning.

Remhoogte might not be the most famous wine estate in Stellenbosch, but as far we know it’s the only one with a bona fide game farm on its grounds. If you’re a dog-lover or just an animal-lover in general, then we would highly recommend making Remhoogte a stop on a Stellenboch wine tour…oh, and the wine is good too.
